Growing up on a farm is more than just a way of life—it shapes your very being. Vast open spaces, a deep connection to the land, and an unspoken understanding of nature’s rhythms become second nature. You learn the value of hard work, the importance of conservation, and, perhaps most profoundly, how the silence of the wilderness brings true rest. This is where our story begins.

John was raised on a small farm in the Free State, where the seasons were unforgiving - scorching summers, icy winters, and constant challenges. Water was scarce, crops withered, and livestock endured tough conditions. Yet, from these hardships came resilience, patience, and an unwavering respect for nature.

Though life eventually led John to the city, his roots remained firmly planted in African soil. He ensured that his children, despite growing up in Gauteng, experienced the quiet beauty of farm life - learning to appreciate its simple yet profound rewards.

In 2013, Bitouwsfontein, a farm just outside Somerset East in the Eastern Cape, came up for sale. Once a thriving landscape, it had been left to the elements - fences broken, fields overgrown, buildings weathered and burned.

Where others saw neglect, John and his son, Rian, saw potential. Beneath the wild grass and faded structures lay an opportunity - to restore, to rebuild, and to bring life back to the land.

Reviving a farm is no small feat. It took years of vision, dedication, and relentless hard work. Kilometers of broken fences had to be replaced, fields cleared, and buildings painstakingly restored. Wildlife needed to be reintroduced, and empty barns filled once more. Each new day presented challenges, made even tougher by a relentless drought.

Through it all, John and Rian remained committed - not just to rebuilding structures, but to reviving a way of life.

Today, Bitouwsfontein is a hidden gem, home to a rich diversity of wildlife. Conservation and sustainability are at the heart of everything they do, ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty of this land.

What was once forgotten now flourishes. And now, John and Rian invite you to experience it for yourself.
